1. Choose a reader and a search task

Start with a question you can answer well, then research demand.

For an adult AI-companion audience, a broad phrase such as “AI girlfriend” can hide several tasks: exploring a category, comparing products, creating a character or understanding usage costs. A page that explains character creation will not satisfy every one of those searches. Decide the job before choosing the biggest number in a tool.

  • Write one sentence describing the reader: “An adult comparing character settings before choosing an AI tool.”
  • List seed topics: character creation, customization settings, subscription versus tokens, product comparisons and getting started.
  • Turn topics into candidate queries: “how to create a Candy AI character”, “Candy AI character settings” and “AI character customization”. These are research candidates, not verified traffic opportunities.
  • Keep customer intent separate from affiliate recruitment. A product walkthrough should use your own customer referral destination; this website’s /join is for partner signup.

Look at the results for each candidate in your target country. If the leading results are tools and product pages, do not assume a long article is the right format. If they are walkthroughs, inspect the steps, evidence and questions those pages cover. Record what you actually see rather than claiming that a generic template matches the results.

2. Collect comparable keyword data

Use a small set of tools for different questions; do not mix their metrics.

Research tools and a repeatable collection sheet
Tool Use it for What to record
Google Keyword Planner Discover related searches and inspect historical search estimates. Country, date range, network, reported monthly volume or range, and close-variant grouping.
Ahrefs Keywords Explorer / difficulty checker Estimate organic ranking competition and inspect competing pages. Country database, estimated volume, KD and the current top-ranking URLs.
Semrush Keyword Overview An alternative research database for volume, difficulty and result inspection. The same region and tool-specific metric definitions. Do not compare its KD directly with another tool’s score.
Google Trends Compare relative interest and possible seasonality. Country, time window and whether you compared a search term or topic; its 0–100 index is not monthly search volume.
Google Search Console After launch, inspect queries and pages that actually receive impressions and clicks. Query, page, country, device and a consistent comparison period.
  1. In Keyword Planner, start with the seed topics or use the search-volume lookup for your prepared list. Select one target country, language settings, search network and period before comparing candidates. Account access may be required.
  2. In Ahrefs or Semrush, use a matching country database. Export the phrases with volume, difficulty, intent notes and ranking URLs. Keep a reported range as a range; do not turn 100–1,000 into a precise 550.
  3. Compare historical interest in Trends. A short-lived spike calls for a different publishing decision from a stable, recurring question.
  4. Save the tool, settings and collection date alongside the export. Recheck shortlisted result pages before writing because estimates and competitors change.

Two common mistakes: Keyword Planner’s Competition field describes advertisers, not organic SEO difficulty. Ahrefs KD is a 0–100 backlink-based estimate and does not assess every on-page factor. Missing data, especially for sensitive or low-volume queries, is not proof of zero demand.

3. Work through volume, difficulty and intent

A complete decision example using clearly hypothetical numbers.

Illustrative dataset—not live keyword metrics. Every volume and KD value below is invented to explain the selection process. It is not an Ahrefs export, a verified demand estimate or a ranking forecast. Replace the figures with a dated export before planning your site.

Hypothetical teaching data; all figures are examples
Candidate query Example monthly searches Example KD Planning decision
AI girlfriend 10,000 80 Broad and difficult in this scenario; not the first page for a new, small site.
Candy AI review 900 42 Comparison intent. Consider later only if you can provide original product evidence.
how to create a Candy AI character 200 12 Specific task with an attainable-looking example score; inspect the actual results next.
Candy AI character settings 80 8 A related question that may belong in the same walkthrough.
Candy AI affiliate commission 150 18 Recruitment intent. Keep it separate from the customer tutorial.

In this scenario, start by investigating the character-creation query. Its volume is smaller, but the task is clear and a complete walkthrough is feasible. A personal first-pass difficulty filter such as KD 0–20 can narrow a list; it is not a universal rule or a promise that you can rank. A low score does not overcome a result page dominated by tools, strong brands or an intent your page cannot satisfy.

  1. Inspect the current result pages for the 200-search candidate. Note page types, referring domains where your tool shows them, freshness, screenshots and unanswered questions. If the result pattern does not fit your proposed page, reject it despite the low example KD.
  2. Check whether the settings query returns substantially the same pages and serves the same task. If so, include it as a section in the walkthrough instead of making a near-duplicate page.
  3. Map the review query to a separate comparison page only when you have enough original evaluation. Keep the affiliate-commission query on a partner-information page.
  4. Do not add 200 and 80 and promise 280 visits. Close variants may overlap; search volume is not clicks, your traffic share or the number of paying users.

Use economics as a second filter. For illustration only, 100 qualified outbound clicks × a hypothetical 1% payer rate × $10 eligible spend × 40% example share produces $4 gross commission before costs or adjustments. That arithmetic is not campaign evidence. Test your own assumptions in the commission calculator .

4. Build a small site around the selected task

One main intent per page, with supporting pages that earn their place.

Suggested architecture, conditional on your verified keyword research
Example page—not a new route on this site Job Links to add
A character-creation walkthrough Answer the selected how-to question from start to finish. A related cost explanation, an honest product comparison and the appropriate customer destination.
A subscription-and-token explainer Answer current access and extra-usage questions. The walkthrough section where payment requirements first matter.
A product comparison Help a reader choose using tested differences and limitations. Relevant feature walkthroughs rather than a wall of repeated affiliate buttons.
An affiliate-program page Explain commissions and partner registration. Partner signup and program terms, not the customer character builder.

Publish the most useful page first. Add another page when it solves a genuinely different task and you can support its claims. Do not generate dozens of city, gender or synonym pages from a single outline just because a tool lists variants. Connect the pages with descriptive links at the point where a reader needs more detail.

5. Turn the keyword into a finished content brief

Use this example as a writing specification, then replace assumptions with your own observations.

Worked brief: character creation

Primary query: how to create a Candy AI character
Related question: which character settings can I change?

Example opening: “This walkthrough follows the character settings I could inspect and explains the access requirements I checked. Before you pay, compare the current subscription and token details with the features you want to use.” Do not present that statement as a first-person test until you have actually performed it.

  1. Record the current interface and your test date. Write the sequence of visible actions, not a guessed button name. If a step requires payment and you have not tested it, say so.
  2. Capture your own permitted screenshots, save them as descriptive WebP files and describe useful content in alt text. Decorative artwork should not pretend to be a real interface.
  3. Place an affiliate disclosure beside the recommendation. Explain relevant limits and usage costs without inventing a price, unlimited access or a guaranteed result.
  4. Write the title and description after finishing the page so they match what it actually delivers. Use one H1 and H2s that follow the reader’s task; keyword repetition is not a substitute for an answer.
  5. Add your own dashboard-generated customer referral URL where the reader can make an informed decision. Test the complete link and inspect the final destination.

6. Publish, measure and choose the next page

Use actual search and referral records to replace the planning assumptions.

  1. Check that the page returns HTTP 200, has the correct self-canonical, is allowed to be indexed and appears in your sitemap. Validate internal links and mobile readability.
  2. Verify your domain in Search Console and submit the sitemap. Inspect the new URL there; a valid page and a submitted sitemap do not guarantee indexing or a ranking.
  3. After the page has enough observations, compare the same query, country, device and period. Impressions without relevant clicks call for a result-intent and title check; clicks without useful referral activity call for a content, destination and tracking check.
  4. Keep pending, validated and reversed commission separate in the partner report. Do not attribute a revenue change to SEO if the reporting periods or traffic sources do not match.
  5. Update unclear steps and outdated evidence before expanding to the next distinct query. Grow from observed questions and useful coverage rather than a quota of articles.
